The EU just gave AI hiring tools two extra years without rules. Who checks your shortlist now?
The EU just gave AI hiring tools two extra years without rules. New research shows recruiters copy their AI's bias 90 percent of the time.
Brussels moved the AI Act hiring deadline to December 2027. The evidence says you cannot wait that long to audit the tools that pick your people.
THE RULES MOVED. THE RISK DID NOT.
On 29 June 2026, the EU Council approved the Digital Omnibus. High-risk obligations for AI hiring tools move from 2 August 2026 to 2 December 2027. The duties do not change. Bias testing, human oversight, documentation, and transparency all still arrive. Fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of global turnover apply to deployers who fail. You are the deployer, even when the vendor built the tool.

YOUR JUDGEMENT FOLLOWS THE MACHINE. The University of Washington tested 528 hiring decision makers against biased AI recommendations. When the AI was severely biased, people followed its pick around 90 percent of the time. Bias awareness training cut biased choices by only 13 percent. A PNAS Nexus study scored 361,000 CVs and found that leading models rate Black male candidates lower on identical qualifications. Human review only works if the human knows the machine leans.

THE 9 PERCENT EDGE INSIDE LINKEDIN
LinkedIn's own data shows recruiters who use AI-assisted messaging are 9 percent more likely to make a quality hire. Acceptance rates on AI-assisted InMails run 44 percent higher than manual ones. The gain comes from redrawing the workflow, not bolting AI onto old habits. Draft with AI, then edit one message by hand and compare your response rate.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
The Algorithm by Hilke Schellmann. The author spent years inside resume screeners, AI video interviews, and game-based assessments. The book asks the question every hiring team avoids: what if the metrics behind your tools are wrong? Read it before you renew your screening contract.
WHAT THIS MEANS HERE. If you hire in Ireland or the UK, the Brussels delay is not an amnesty. Irish employment equality law and GDPR apply to your AI shortlist today, not in 2027. Employers who build their audit trail now buy two years of advantage over teams that treat the delay as permission to look away.
One action this week: list every tool that scores a person in your funnel, then ask each vendor for its latest bias audit in writing. Save this for your next hiring review.
Would you let an AI system shortlist candidates without human review if it had passed a bias audit? Tell me why or why not.
